Treasures in Heaven

“Lay not up for yourself treasures on earth,” Jesus said on the Sermon of the mount, “where moth and rust destroy. But lay up for yourselves treasures in Heaven where neither moth nor rust destroys.” (Mt. 6:19-20) Where will everything you own and treasure now, be in a hundred years? A junk yard, an antique mall, a land fill, or a pile of ashes?

Nothing we have on this earth, no matter how rich we are, could ever give us what Heaven offers. No matter how wealthy, or destitute, we are, we should develop a longing for Heaven. It is far better than anything we could ever know here! After one or two hundred years everything you own now will be decayed, trashed, torn down or in disrepair. In twenty years, your car will probably be in the junk yard.  How many homes in your town are over a hundred years old?

Not only will your things be gone, one hundred years from now the memory of your existence on this earth will be little more than a name on a tombstone and a line on a family tree. The only thing that will last is the treasure you lay up in Heaven.  Your faith, good deeds, love of God’s word and worship of the Almighty will be remembered and rewarded forever in that eternal city foursquare!”
